Orkut Or Facebook? The Debate Continues...
Being a regular user of both networking sites, I can't but help notice the vast differences in the way both Orkut and Facebook approach the situation.
One thing about Orkut is the ease of use and the "made for the aam-aadmi" look it prefers to have... Facebook seems to be a little more ?professional but it's getting cluttered nowadays with the various applications and invites and pokes and hugs and notifications making for a really messy profile page.
Also, Orkut's more popular outside the U.S. like in the Asian Subcontinent and Brazil etc... Facebook's a more U.S. thing... And the difference shows. Techcrunch has this to say about it.
The problem is that security issues remain since Orkut profiles keep getting hacked more often... I know 3 of my friends' accounts that have been hacked into on Orkut and 1 person's account on Facebook. Remembering passwords is tough, but maybe I think it's time to keep changing passwords and clicking that logout button when you leave the site, as the friendly red lettered warning advises. Also, misuse and abuse seem to be the norm in Orkut with some scandal or the other always arising and popping up in the papers... Women in particular are being targetted (duh), so I think they should be a little careful when it comes to putting their pictures and personal details on their profile page... But of course, you've heard this all before. I think it comes with the turf of being an internationally used site but still maybe a 'Big Brother' approach might help tone cyber crimes in this site. Many people are migrating from Orkut to Facebook, and rightly so until Google takes care of the problem.![]()
Facebook seems safer, till now. Maybe because of the lesser number of people using it today. But will it be safe enough when it reaches Orkut's status? Will it be safe if cyber criminals start using both sites for a wider range of victims to prey on? What will our cyber-cops do then?
I'm not saying Orkut is bad. I prefer it personally, because I'm so used to it and all my friends are on it. (Something like my Hotmail account, when everyone's switched to Gmail.)... I use it more often than I use Facebook... But something about that "poking" makes me wanna go back more often now...
Here's some food for thought from An Unquiet Mind...

That's an interesting observation. I've never used Orkut before (not even heard much about it as well) but I'm using Facebook, although it's still not very popular here... In this part of Asia, Friendster is more popular
I quit orkut, joined facebook and quit that too,and i'm reasonably happy without an online social life :) how have u been?
Your post is interesting. I start using orkut when it wasn't so popular as it is now, - at a time when profiles didn't have the option to block your photos and all that stuff, you could look at people profiles without their knowledge, and the phrase "BAD BAD SERVER! No donut for you! was more than common - and, I found it much more interesting those days, because the spammers for example, didn't exist. Since then, I have closed and re opened my profile four times because of spam and I don't use it as much as I used to. On the other hand, I'm starting using facebook more and more but, sometimes I wonder if it's popularity will or not bring the problems that orkut has. Maybe is just about waiting and see...
